The Communications Integrator (CI) is a message-oriented middlewaresoftware package that provides applications with reliable asynchronous orsynchronous communication services over a heterogeneous networkenvironment. It resides between the application and the underlyingcommunications protocol stacks. Applications use a simple ApplicationProgram Interface (API) so that programmers do not need communicationsprogramming expertise when porting or writing new application programs.The CI creates a virtual network for application interoperability byhaving them reference each other by mnemonic names rather than physicaladdresses. CI also handles the protocol trans- lations as the messagetraverses the heterogeneous topology. To the originating application,the destination application appears to be a single hop away regardless ofthe physical hops needed in the actual network.
